Pim Piët, line poetry; Bos fine art, The Hague

Recently Pim Piët (1954) showed work partly based on words, music, rhythm and silence.

Presently, at Bos fine art, he also exhibits works without these features.

These compositions have incisions and most of them have muted colours.

Every composition seems to have started with an idea of harmonic perfection, knowing that perfection can only exist with imperfections.

Visible brush strokes and the structure of the wood in the panels make the works breathe.

Almost every one of the works is a gem of inner balance.

As usual Piët also made his own exhibition, making the show itself a work of harmony as much as the individual works.

Caro Rambonnet, Space Debris; Pulchri Studio, The Hague

It is not very likely that robots will take over in future, but they are perfect creatures for fairy tales.

Caro Rambonnet’s paintings in her present show at Pulchri Studio look like pictures from a science fiction fairy tale or from a comic story.

There is even an almost real robot, disguised as a chair. Rambonnet’s world of science fiction doesn’t seem to be one with dangers and pitfalls, but neither is it one big pink happy world.

There are almost no human beings in her paintings (except in this show for a merry astronaut) but there are enough things made by human beings, including her own works.

There are, as usual in Rambonnet’s work, some abstract paintings as well, which seem to fit in perfectly in the abstract mind of a robot or in a futurist world.

I have a weak spot for Rambonnet’s work, which seems to be an almost constant flow of translations from the real into an alternative world.

Façades of The Hague #104

Villa, Balistraat corner Laan Copes van Cattenburch.

The house was built in the 1880s, according to the gable stone in 1882, in an opulent neo-renaissance style.

Laan Copes van Cattenburch and Balistraat were built in the 1870s (Balistraat even a bit earlier) as a new frontier in the dunes towards the northwest of the city.

Although it is quite a remarkable building, it has no special monumental status, but it is, of course, part of a local state protected cityscape.

Fiona Lutjenhuis, Prospects & Concepts

Art Rotterdam has become the strongest contemporary art fair in the Netherlands.

As for its quantity, it isn’t too big or too small and quality standards have become quite high.

Although there are no radical statements, this year’s fair can’t be called dull.

Maybe the art world has shrunk back a bit by all kinds of radicality that seem to do more harm than good to the world, as things don’t look particularly happy-go-lucky either.

Of course an art fair isn’t a stage for philosophy, but the tendency is very much on what makes us human and what we value in life.
